If God came to Earth to enjoy his creation, then, as his children, we are to some extent here for the same purpose. If nothing else, we should enjoy the world and help our brothers and sisters do the same. Our life on earth was meant to be an amazing experience.
For many, though, the reality is far from amazing. Lives are ruined by hunger, disease, pain and despair. Much of this we inflict on each other, and a good deal more is inflicted upon us my the natural world. So what has gone wrong?
Many people who believe in God find this a hard question to answer, and I am no exception. However, I feel that the mistake most people make is to start from the notion that God is infallible. Where does this idea come from? The world around us, which is God's handiwork, is sprinkled with a good selection of mistakes and imperfections. These lead me to believe the God is not perfect, that he has made errors and miscalculations. It is convenient to invent some other 'being' (e.g. the 'devil') to carry the blame for the problems, or to even blame mankind for being 'sinful'. But I don't see it like that. If God 'created' the world then he is responsible for both the good (of which there is plenty) and the bad. We want to believe in an infallible God, but it isn't the case. Why should it be?
God intended us to share in the joy of his creation. He didn't intend us to have to suffer. It was a mistake which, unfortunately, we are going to have to live with. If God could do something about it, he would. He doesn't sit around 'allowing' his children to fight each other or be plagued by disease or be struck by disasters. God loves us - we are his children. It's just that he can't do anything to stop it. God isn't infallible; he isn't omnipotent either. This is a physical world. God set it all going according to his plan, but he has no power to change things. If he could, he would.
So I'm afraid, it's all down to us. We're here, on the ground, and we have the choice: we can try to change things for the better or we can change them for the worse. It's no use praying or waiting for a miracle. It's down to you and me. Life can be better for all of us, but only we can make it so.
